The NSG370 transmission, first introduced in 2005 as the first 6-speed transmission to be fitted to a Jeep. The transmission was direct evidence of Chrysler’s collaboration with Daimler at the time.
The 370 transmissions replaced the NV3550 and NV1500 with the same strength in the Wrangler and Liberty vehicles. The 370 has been installed in other Chrysler and Mercedes products, such as the Crossfire and ML series.
Characteristics and features
The NSG370 is a higher displacement transmission with a longitudinal load. It has six speeds with a fifth direct drive speed and a sixth overdrive speed.
The NSG370 has a cast aluminum housing with generous ribs. The integrated front hood is available in Jeep 4.0L I6 and Mopar 3.7L V6 versions. The front bearing bracket has an integrated sleeve for a conventional bearing in the entire bearing.
The number of slots for the input shaft is ten slots x 1-1/8″ diameter.
The output shaft has 23 splines.

The NSG370 is quite powerful, with an input torque of 272 ft/lbs, according to the manufacturer. The output torque limits are in the range of 1100-1300 ft. Pounds, making it a good solution for the NP231 and NP241OR transfer cases. The design of the gearbox and a clearly good technical level within the gearbox indicate that it should be quite durable.
Individuals, however, reported problems with the transmission that jumped backward in the 2005 model. This was common enough to obtain DCx approval to require an upgrade consisting of a new reverse gear kit (#05175903AA) consisting of a new reverse gear, a slider and a synchronizing ring and retaining rings, a shaft seal and a counter-rotating plug for the shaft seal, related to the gear breakage required.
Transfer box compatibility
The 370 was factory-matched with NP231, NP241OR, and NP241J transfer cases. It features the common mounting face of the 6-bolt Jeep / Dodge transfer case for driver-side transfer cases.
